What am I doing now?

Happily bumping my way through the Middle East, my second Christmas away from home was looming. I talked to my Mom on Skype, heard the strain in her voice, and realized I was pushing it a bit. It’s an important time of year for my family, whom I’m incredibly close to. So, I decided to come home and surprise them. I showed up on their door, the day before a week of -40C. It was well worth it just for their reactions.

Once here, I did a quick tour of the US to catch up with friends. Some I’ve known for years, others were new friends from my travels. My best friend Jen, at the thezenofjen.com had been feeding me information on how to live the life of a digital nomad. So I went to Dallas and spent a week with her, brainstorming and creating. Once I realized how much work needed to be done before I got on the plane, I settled in and got to work, still planning to leave in a ‘few more weeks’.

Then it was suggested that I stick around for PubCon (marketing conference) in April. Then it was suggested I stick around for the birth of my sisters first baby. Then it was suggested I just stick around for the summer and help my parents build a guesthouse at our family cabin. PubCon would be a great career move, the birth of my sisters baby is only going to happen once, and I owe my parents big time.

I’ll spend the spring working, networking, writing, editing my 14,000 photos. I’ll backpack in the incredible Rocky Mountains. I’ll fly fish the creeks and lakes around me. I’ll sit in silence in the log cabin. You’re welcome to join me, I’ll show you my incredible country.

So, without a deadline looming, I will continue as I am. I haven’t changed that part of me that I loved so much while I traveled. I’ll know when it’s time to start traveling again. I’ll decide where I’m going the day I book my trip. The rest, I will leave to serendipity.

    Dear Shauna,
    '
What a wonderful account of your thoughts and travels. It almost makes me wish I
would have done something so daring and brave.
The pictures are fantastic, your prose is eloquent. I foresee great things for you as a news correspondent, or travel expert.

Especially enjoyed your analysis of the life you had vs. the one you want.
    Keep up the good work.
    Love,
    Fleurette
